We’re not sure what Ben means by “not going to school,” but we do know that Ben is currently at his school, and he is not going to be attending. Ben is someone who seems to be a bit overzealous about having a “presidential” career, and he is also overbearing.
Ben seems like a jerk, but he’s also not the kind of jerk you want to be. I think this is part of the reason Ben is staying at his school. Ben has the power to do a lot of things that are not good for a college president. If Ben could get his way, there would be a lot of students at his school who would be out of school by the time they got there. And that would be bad.
Ben, a former professor, is worried that his students are going to leave the school to take jobs they don’t like. He wants them to find another school, ideally with an easier commute. He also wants them to be at his school for the rest of their lives.
Ben’s plan is to get his students to stay at his school as long as possible. He wants them to stay and succeed at everything they do and become lifelong residents. And when Ben tries to turn the tables and make them feel bad, they are not going to like him, so Ben decides to make something of it. He decides to make a joke. He goes on a date with a girl and makes a joke about his plans. His plan works.
Ben is able to make a pretty convincing case on the fact that he is just a normal guy who is the college’s new president, and the girl happens to be a woman who likes to make jokes. But he also has a point. The very fact that a bunch of students will not like him is telling him something. The students are not just ungrateful people. They are also the ones who are going to be at the college next year.
No, they are not ungrateful people. They are people who would rather see Ben fail than fail to succeed. This is not a “I can’t help myself” situation where one of his friends comes to his aid. This is a “I don’t want to be here” situation. People who are ungrateful are people who don’t want to be here, and they will not be here.
